At 62, I’d still pick my Model Y

My Model Y and a C8 Corvette from my own photo, next to Tesla’s new Roadster from Tesla’s press photo, painted red to match. Tesla hasn’t shown it in red. The three were combined and relit to look like one studio shot. (Roadster image: Tesla.)

Put three red cars in front of me. The new Tesla Roadster, a new Corvette, and my Model Y. All things being equal, at 62, I’d take the Model Y with FSD.

Why would I say that? Because the other two are special-condition cars. They don’t match my everyday life. They’d be fun for a spin. But they’re probably not what I’d drive every day.

My every day is errands around Kansas City, passengers, and a road trip now and then. I’ve put 22,204 miles on this car, and about 98% of them were on FSD. That’s the part I wouldn’t want to give up.

Then there’s the weather. I can’t imagine how well a Corvette would work on a snowy day.

I don’t know what the Roadster is going to do in rain or snow, either. Tesla says it has fans that pull air from under the car to hold it to the road. It seems like that might kick up a lot of water. They didn’t say anything about what happens when the car sucks itself down to a wet road.

The Roadster is a long way off anyway. Tesla is taking $50,000 reservations, it hasn’t given a price, and production is supposed to start in 2028. A 2027 Corvette Stingray starts at about $73,500.

So if those were my three choices, I’d keep what’s in my driveway.
