The two co-pilots on my dash
Two small co-pilots ride on my dash, Jesus and Mary, and they've been aboard almost as long as I have. I won't claim they're part of the redundancy stack. But I'll tell you what they're genuinely good for. People get in the car, the car starts driving itself, and a first-timer never quite knows what to do with that. Then they spot two little figures standing calm as anything while the wheel turns by itself, and something about it breaks the tension. Everybody relaxes. A car that drives itself is either unsettling or it's funny, and the difference is mostly what you put on the dash. The sash on the one says Jesus loves you. The other one has watched a thousand miles of interstate go by without blinking. Between the two of them and the eight cameras, I figure we're covered.
